Load a MEL Manual through TraxDoc, via Master Minimum Equipment List (MEL) Doctype

The MEL manual provides an approved list for a particular A/C type that includes items that may be unserviceable at the start of a flight. The manufacturer for this manual is Airbus.

TRAX allows the user to load MELs into a database via TraxDoc.

The following topic will explain in detail how to complete the below steps:

  • How to create a TraxDoc for the MEL doctype
  • How to Load a MEL manual into TraxDoc
  • How to Import the MEL into the Trax system

TraxDoc Setup (MEL):

Create a TraxDoc.

Specify the SGML/XML Doctype in the TraxDoc Document Detail, Optional tab.

Loading an MEL into TraxDoc:

From the TraxDoc Explorer, right click and select the New/ Load XML but_load_xml.jpg button as shown below. The user may also select the Load XML but_load_xml.jpg button from the File Multi but_file_multi button.

From the TraxDoc SGML Load window, populate the XML Instance File.

Note: Only the XML Instance file is required for the MEL Load. The other options in the window below are generic fields/options which are used for other Load types (i.e AMM, AIPC, etc.).

logo_15 small button Note: The Dispatch Concurrence value associated with MELs imported via this process will automatically import into the system. The Dispatch Concurrence checkbox in the MEL Revision window will be selected if the Dispatch_Concurrence value equals "true" in the imported XML file. The Dispatch Concurrence checkbox will be deselected if the Dispatch_Concurrence value equals "false" in the imported XML file.

The following information/options are available in this window:

Select the manual’s declaration file, if any. This file is located in the SGML folder and will end should end in .sdl.

This does not pertain to the MEL Load.

DTD File

Select the manual’s DTD (Document Type Definition) file. This file is located in the SGML folder and should end in .dtd.

This does not pertain to the MEL Load.

SGML Instance File

Select the specified SGML file.

This does not pertain to the MEL Load.

XML Instance File

Select the specified XML file.

Image Directory

Browse the directory (on the portable media) where images are stored and and select media to be imported.

This does not pertain to the MEL Load.

Enable Duplicated Tasks checkbox

Select this checkbox to load duplicate tasks from duplicate chapters. The TraxDoc XML Load program will add the last four digits of the XML file name to each task, regardless if the task is repeated or not.

This does not pertain to the MEL Load.

Convert Images to JPEG checkbox

Select this checkbox to convert images (i,e .PNG, .CGM, etc.) to .JPEG. This checkbox is important for those customers who use a third party DLL who does not support certain image types, therefore they must be converted to .JPEG.

This does not pertain to the MEL Load.

Alternate Reference Name Order checkbox

When this checkbox is selected, elements with ATA information such as Task/Subtask will be in the form (CHAPNBR-SECNBR-SUBJNBR-FUNC-SEQ-VARNBR-CONFLTR). When this checkbox is de-selected, these items will be in the form (CHAPNBR-SECNBR-SUBJNBR-FUNC-SEQ-CONFLTR-VARNBR).

This does not pertain to the MEL Load.

logo_12_5 small Note: In TRAX Version 12.5 and all later releases, all applicable TraxDoc imports support five digit aircraft Manufacturer Serial Numbers (MSN), so long as TraxDoc switch AMMDESIGNATORTYPE is set to Yes.

Once the user has selected into the XML Instance File field, locate the correct XML file.

Once the XML file is populated, select Save.

If an image directory was not selected, the system will prompt the user with the following message. Select 'Yes' to continue with the MEL XML Load without including images.

Note: MELs do not contain image files. This pop up is a generic pop up that pertains to other Loads.

The following Load XML pop up will appear. Select 'OK' to continue with the load.

The following MS-DOC window will appear. The system will begin to load the records. The command window will remain open until the XML import is complete. This allows the user to review any errors that may have been generated by the process. Once all of the records have been loaded, the user may exit this window to continue.

The manual is loaded in the TraxDoc as shown below:

Importing MELs into the System:

Once the XML has been loaded successfully into TraxDoc, the user must import the manual into the system to create the MEL.

From the TraxDoc Document, General tab. Select the Import from OEM Manual but_import_from_oem_manual_small button.

The TraxDoc is effective to the following A/C Type/Series:

The MEL Create from MEL window appears. Populate all mandatory and desired information and run the import the same as any other.

Note: The Taskcard TraxDoc field is populated with the SGML Designator for the A/C Type/Series (i.e 581).

Select the Continue but_select button.

TRAX displays the following window:

Select the MELs to be imported. Use the buttons in the middle of the window to move the MELs from the Mel(S) panel to the Mel(S) To Import panel.

Once all desired MELs have been moved to the right panel, select the Run but_run (small) button.

Note: Effectivity can also be reviewed through the View MEL Effectivity but_effectivity_small button.

The Traxdoc Import window will appear displaying the progress of the import. An information box will appear once the import is successfully completed. The below MELs have been created in TRAX.

Go to Settings/ Update/ MEL Authorization Management.

The MELs have been loaded into the system:
